The role is responsible for routinely contracting, co-ordinating and delivering health outcome assessment products and services to our diverse client base in the healthcare sector, whilst developing and having ownership of new business activities for the Clinical Outcomes team at OUI. You will be the magic that turns university-born research into health outcome measurement solutions, that ultimately has positive and transformative healthcare benefit.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will work within the motivated and experienced Clinical Outcomes team, focusing on commercialising Clinical Outcomes Assessments (COAs) used across the healthcare sector. The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Working collaboratively with the team and external stakeholders helping to develop and grow the overall health outcomes business activity
  • Managing the routine delivery of the Clinical Outcomes licensing activity and negotiating the appropriate service and licensing contracts with the client base
  • With experience, identifying and executing new commercial strategies
  • Working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise their research related to health outcomes.

The Applicant

The successful candidate will ideally have a postgraduate degree (or equivalent) in a suitable subject, for example linguistics, and/or fluent in multiple foreign (ideally European) languages. It is essential you will have an enterprising outlook (if not the formal training) to drive forward business opportunities. Other key competencies include:

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, and the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with a diverse client base
  • Willing to rapidly take on responsibility for routine delivery of the business, ideally demonstrating independence in the role
  • Attention to detail and to feel personally rewarded by routinely delivering the highest quality of service to our client base.

The Opportunity
The successful candidate will work within a talented and experienced team in the Licensing & Ventures Group, focusing on commercialising technologies developed predominantly from Engineering, Physics and Computer Science. The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise new technologies
  • Identifying and executing new commercial strategies for transferring technologies to industry
  • Negotiating appropriate licensing contracts, in conjunction with legal experts
  • Supporting the formation of spinout companies.

The Applicant

The successful applicant will have an engineering, physics, computer sciences or mathematics degree (or equivalent) with a PhD or MBA desirable but not essential. However, it is essential that you will have a good appreciation of research and development in a physical sciences field gained either in a commercial or technical role. You should also demonstrate a passion for entrepreneurship and enterprise, ideally also possessing some experience of related activities and with the ambition to achieve results. You will also need to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Oxford University Innovation Ltd is the highly successful research and technology commercialisation company owned by the University of Oxford. Working with over four thousand of the world’s brightest minds, we help them translate their ideas and expertise into projects that make a tangible difference to businesses and governments through technology licensing and the formation of spin-out companies.

The OUI Investments team is a newly formed team combining New Ventures Support and Spinout Equity Management. The OUI Investments team’s main responsibilities include: translational funding, supporting new company formation, fund raising, fund management and portfolio management.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated Investment Associate to join this team and support the Head of Investments in the development and delivery of the Investment team’s objectives outlined above.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Supporting the management of the translational funds. Assisting in the identification of new applications, managing the required investment committees and auditing the funds’ performance. These funds include the University Challenge Seed Fund, the Oxford Invention Fund and the Parkwalk University of Oxford Innovation Fund.
  • Supporting the identification of early stage investors through the Oxford Angels Network and OxReach platform. Activities will include liaising with investors, identifying companies seeking funding through the network, managing investor events and identifying new partner organisations.
  • Assisting the OUI Investment and Licensing & Ventures teams in the co-ordination of first round of investments into spinout, startup and social enterprises.
  • Assisting in managing the portfolio of OUI’s shareholding in startup companies. Working with the Head of Investments to assess the performance of the companies and provide annual valuations to the OUI board.

The successful candidate will have a business, economics or relevant science degree (or equivalent). They will ideally have experience of working in a financial or business environment. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for early stage investment with the University ecosystem.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Early stage investment - a good knowledge base of the UK early stage investment market and the challenges faced by University led companies.
  • Communicating with others - excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing, and with a wide range of people and organisations.
  • Relationship with others - the ability to contribute to the newly formed OUI Investments team. To be able to either work independently or as part of a small team.
  • Data management - effectively managing data and possession of high levels of attention to detail in all areas of their work.
  • Self-starter - the ability to use your initiative to find solutions to problems and come to a positive resolution.
  • Commercial analysis - making considered decisions that demonstrate sound judgement and good analysis.

The OUI Investments team is a newly formed team combining New Ventures Support and Spinout Equity Management. The OUI Investments team’s main responsibilities include: translational funding, supporting new company formation, fund raising, fund management and portfolio management.

We now have an exciting opportunity for two charismatic and motivated Investment Managers to join this team and support the Head of Investments in the development and delivery of the Investment team’s objectives outlined above.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Maintaining a seamless approach to spinout activities by proactively collaborating and supporting the Licensing & Ventures team in the creation of spinout, startup and social enterprises.
  • Supporting the management and expansion of the commercial funds including the Spinout Equity Management Fund and the Parkwalk University of Oxford Innovation Fund.
  • Reporting to the investment committees of the Funds and identifying new companies to support.
  • Acting as an ambassador for Oxford University Innovation and the University of Oxford, raising its profile within the investment and industry audiences. Supporting the raising of funds within the investment ecosystem for the University and its investment portfolio.
  • Acting as a spinout company Board level observer/director where appropriate, and working closely with Boards to build sustainable business platforms.
  • Obtaining and monitoring information submitted by spinouts and creating advisory reports to enable the University to be aware of the value of its assets, and of opportunities to invest further capital.
  • Supporting the realisation of the University and OUI’s investment portfolio to create a sustainable business model for the Investment team.

The successful candidate will have a Science degree (or equivalent) and ideally industrial and managerial experience in a life sciences or a technology business. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for learning and personal development alongside a desire to achieve results.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Early stage investment - a good knowledge base of the UK early stage investment market and the challenges faced by University led companies.
  • Project management - conscientious, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritise workloads and multiple projects.
  • Financial evaluation - equipped to handle the financial and commercial aspects of managing a venture capital portfolio including financial analysis and reporting valuations.
  • Commercial analysis - designing, developing and critiquing business strategies based on sound judgement and good analysis.
  • Communicating with confidence - weighing up alternative courses of action, making firm decisions and persuading others. Able to influence and engender respect from a wide range of stakeholders both verbally and written.
  • Relationship with others – the ability to contribute to the newly formed OUI Investments team. To be able to either work independently or as part of a small team. Supporting the personal development of members with the OUI Investments’ team and the wider OUI organisation.
