Assistant Technology Transfer Manager (Physical Sciences) Ref 122

We now have an exciting opportunity for a charismatic and motivated Assistant Technology Transfer Manager to support the highly qualified and driven team within the Licensing & Ventures Group to deliver on a range of their objectives including:

  • Defining commercial strategies for new technologies
  • Analysis of technologies, patents, markets and data
  • Writing marketing materials, and supporting OUI’s commercial and marketing activities.

The role will report into the Deputy Head of Technology Transfer and has an emphasis on project management, marketing and analysis. The Assistant Technology Transfer Manager will obtain a broad introduction into technology transfer activities.

Often working as part of a team on high-priority, complex technology transfer projects, the key responsibilities of the Assistant Technology Transfer Manager will be to support the Licensing & Ventures Group in:

  • Managing projects a successful conclusion
  • Managing project administration and supporting the relevant project manager in project work
  • Undertaking market research and analysis to enable commercially viable deals to be completed
  • Supporting the marketing of technologies to potential end-users in industry
  • Creating a strong team within the Group.

The successful candidate will have a Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science degree (or equivalent), and ideally have some experience of progressing projects in either academia or industry. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for learning and personal development alongside a desire to achieve results. Post-graduate qualifications, a demonstrated ability to cross scientific disciplines and/or engineering, software and ICT experience would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Communicating effectively with a wide range of people and organisations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Managing relationships through challenging situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Grasping technical concepts quickly, and understanding how these can be developed into marketable and commercially viable ideas
  • Making considered decisions that demonstrate sound judgement and good analysis
  • Learning quickly, accepting constructive feedback and putting it into practice.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional Deputy Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) who will work closely with his/her counterparts in Physical Sciences to lead, manage and coach a team of highly qualified and driven Technology Transfer Managers to deliver a range of objectives.

This role will report into the Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) and will include working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise their technologies by defining commercial strategies, protecting and managing IP, and marketing and selling the technologies.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Managing a significant team project portfolio to achieve a successful performance, and to budget
  • Managing the relationship between OUI and the inventor(s)
  • Acting as a spin-out company Board level observer/director, where appropriate
  • Acting as an ambassador for Oxford University Innovation and the University of Oxford, raising its profile within the innovation ecosystem.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in managing the commercialisation of life sciences technologies at the University of Oxford and in developing resources and networks (internal and external) to optimise this process. The successful candidate must have relevant industry experience and will ideally have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline and/or an MBA. They must also have the ability to inspire a team, possess strong people management skills and the ambition to achieve results, along with a commitment to integrity and sound commercial judgement.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Leading and coaching highly capable professionals in a high performance team
  • Working effectively with key stakeholders, assertively influencing them and, where appropriate, show tenacity and persistence in business development situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Successfully negotiating contracts with relevant industry sectors.

The Technology Transfer Group has an exciting opportunity for the successful applicant to join its highly motivated and successful team in Oxford. We are looking for a (Senior) Technology Transfer Manager who can focus on commercialising the outcomes of the University’s research in computational biology, digital health and relevant multidisciplinary subjects with a focus on healthcare and medical technologies. The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise new university technologies in the areas of digital health, medical devices or computational biology
  • Identifying commercial strategies for transferring technologies to industry, including marketing to potential end-users
  • Negotiating appropriate licensing contracts, in conjunction with legal experts
  • Managing the formation of a spin-out company and running programmes that involve a variety of interdependent projects
  • Managing and administering post-deal activity.

The successful candidate will ideally have a PhD* (*or equivalent) in a relevant biomedical, life, informatics or computer science or an MBA* with a degree* in the medical technology space. Commercial experience in relevant industry is highly desirable, and must have the ambition to achieve results, along with a commitment to integrity and sound commercial judgement. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Grasping technical concepts quickly, and translating these into commercially viable proposals
  • Working effectively with key stakeholders, assertively influencing them and where appropriate showing tenacity and persistence in business development situations
