General Manager and Club Secretary, The Bugatti Owners' Club

The Bugatti Owners’ Club established in 1929 is one of UK’s most prestigious motor clubs with over 2,200 members and a staff of seven based on the Club’s privately-owned Prescott Estate in Gotherington near Cheltenham.

The successful candidate will be the public face of the Club, and the main point of contact between the membership and the Club office. The General Manager reports directly to the Club Chairman, and is responsible to the non-executive Board for the overall performance of the Club against agreed strategic plans and budgets. You will be responsible for an experienced team of staff who manage the Club’s busy programme of on-site events, and a committed membership who volunteer over a wide range of activities from managing the Club’s archives to marshalling and stewarding at motor racing events held on the historic Prescott Hillclimb course.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Managing all aspects of the Club against an agreed annual budget and strategy
  • Negotiating major contracts, nurturing sponsors and commercial relationships
  • Organising the compilation of the annual events calendar, specifically the seven weekends of competitive motorsport held at Prescott
  • Managing an experienced team and the many Club volunteers
  • Managing the Club’s financial affairs and its relationship with the auditors
  • Organising events and PR including press releases, quarterly newsletters, brochures and leaflet production, and up-front media representation to ensure good PR visibility
  • Managing local contractors in the maintenance and development of the Estate and the suppliers to events
  • Liaising with and attending community, motoring and Hillclimb committee meetings
  • Managing the Club’s relationships with the sport’s governing body, the Motor Sport Association (MSA), trade associations and key car clubs.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to engage across a wide and diverse range of Club stakeholders
  • Leadership skills in a multi-stakeholder and regulated environment
  • Established track record in business management
  • Ability to deliver an excellent visitor experience to members and supporters of the Club
  • Planning and project management skills.

Salary for this role will be £55k plus benefits.

Senior Business Manager, UCL Business

UCL Business PLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of University College London and generate income and create capital value for UCL and partner hospitals through the commercial exploitation of its extensive research base.

We are looking to recruit a Senior Business Manager to join their BioPharm team, who will be responsible for the technology transfer activities of mainly the UCL Institute of Opthalmology as well as other University departments.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong grounding in a biological or medical-related discipline to PhD level, together with significant commercial experience and an excellent grasp of intellectual property issues.

Previous technology transfer experience is desirable. The individual will be highly motivated and enthusiastic, with excellent negotiation, communication and organisational skills.

They will be required to work closely with academics and clinicians in identifying wide-ranging novel technologies, enable the development of the technologies, and ultimately the commercialisation of them at the interface of academia, healthcare and industry.

This is an exciting, highly dynamic role which is different to most other technology transfer business manager roles in that UCLB recently raised two investment funds: the UCL Technology Fund (£50 million, VC-backed fund) and the Apollo Therapeutics Fund (£40 million, in collaboration with Imperial Innovations, Cambridge Enterprise, GSK, AZ and J&J). The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with both funds, thereby giving direct and significant experience in working with these funds.

Salary range will be between £45k-£60k pro rata depending on experience. In addition, the company operates a contributory pension scheme and performance-related pay scheme.

Deputy Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) Ref 120 (now filled)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional Deputy Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) who will work closely with his/her counterparts in Physical Sciences to lead, manage and coach a team of highly qualified and driven Technology Transfer Managers to deliver a range of objectives.

This role will report into the Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) and will include working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise their technologies by defining commercial strategies, protecting and managing IP, and marketing and selling the technologies.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Managing a significant team project portfolio to achieve a successful performance, and to budget
  • Managing the relationship between OUI and the inventor(s)
  • Acting as a spin-out company Board level observer/director, where appropriate
  • Acting as an ambassador for Oxford University Innovation and the University of Oxford, raising its profile within the innovation ecosystem.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in managing the commercialisation of life sciences technologies at the University of Oxford and in developing resources and networks (internal and external) to optimise this process. The successful candidate must have relevant industry experience and will ideally have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline and/or an MBA. They must also have the ability to inspire a team, possess strong people management skills and the ambition to achieve results, along with a commitment to integrity and sound commercial judgement.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Leading and coaching highly capable professionals in a high performance team
  • Working effectively with key stakeholders, assertively influencing them and, where appropriate, show tenacity and persistence in business development situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Successfully negotiating contracts with relevant industry sectors.

The successful candidate will have a science degree (or equivalent), preferably a further science degree and/or business qualification such as an MBA, and ideally industrial and managerial experience in a life sciences or a technology business. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Project management: conscientious, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritise workloads and multiple projects
  • Finance reporting: equipped to handle the financial aspects of reporting valuations using conventional valuation techniques
  • Influencing: a team player able to influence and engender respect from a wide range of stakeholders
  • Analysis: designing, developing and critiquing business strategies based on sound judgement and good analysis
