Ref 134 Investment Associate

Oxford University Innovation Ltd is the highly successful research and technology commercialisation company owned by the University of Oxford. The OUI Investments team is a newly formed team combining New Ventures Support and Spinout Equity Management. The OUI Investments team’s main responsibilities include: translational funding, supporting new company formation, fund raising, fund management and portfolio management.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated Investment Associate to join this team and support the Head of Investments in the development and delivery of the Investment team’s objectives outlined above.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Supporting the management of the translational funds. Assisting in the identification of new applications, managing the required investment committees and auditing the funds’ performance. These funds include the University Challenge Seed Fund, the Oxford Invention Fund and the Parkwalk University of Oxford Innovation Fund.
  • Supporting the identification of early stage investors through the Oxford Angels Network and OxReach platform. Activities will include liaising with investors, identifying companies seeking funding through the network, managing investor events and identifying new partner organisations.
  • Assisting the OUI Investment and Licensing & Ventures teams in the co-ordination of first round of investments into spinout, startup and social enterprises.
  • Assisting in managing the portfolio of OUI’s shareholding in startup companies. Working with the Head of Investments to assess the performance of the companies and provide annual valuations to the OUI board.

The successful candidate will have a business, economics or relevant science degree (or equivalent). They will ideally have experience of working in a financial or business environment. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for early stage investment with the University ecosystem.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Early stage investment - a good knowledge base of the UK early stage investment market and the challenges faced by University led companies.
  • Communicating with others - excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing, and with a wide range of people and organisations.
  • Relationship with others - the ability to contribute to the newly formed OUI Investments team. To be able to either work independently or as part of a small team.
  • Data management - effectively managing data and possession of high levels of attention to detail in all areas of their work.
  • Self-starter - the ability to use your initiative to find solutions to problems and come to a positive resolution.
  • Commercial analysis - making considered decisions that demonstrate sound judgement and good analysis.

The OUI Investments team is a newly formed team combining New Ventures Support and Spinout Equity Management. The OUI Investments team’s main responsibilities include: translational funding, supporting new company formation, fund raising, fund management and portfolio management.

We now have an exciting opportunity for two charismatic and motivated Investment Managers to join this team and support the Head of Investments in the development and delivery of the Investment team’s objectives outlined above.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Maintaining a seamless approach to spinout activities by proactively collaborating and supporting the Licensing & Ventures team in the creation of spinout, startup and social enterprises.
  • Supporting the management and expansion of the commercial funds including the Spinout Equity Management Fund and the Parkwalk University of Oxford Innovation Fund.
  • Reporting to the investment committees of the Funds and identifying new companies to support.
  • Acting as an ambassador for Oxford University Innovation and the University of Oxford, raising its profile within the investment and industry audiences. Supporting the raising of funds within the investment ecosystem for the University and its investment portfolio.
  • Acting as a spinout company Board level observer/director where appropriate, and working closely with Boards to build sustainable business platforms.
  • Obtaining and monitoring information submitted by spinouts and creating advisory reports to enable the University to be aware of the value of its assets, and of opportunities to invest further capital.
  • Supporting the realisation of the University and OUI’s investment portfolio to create a sustainable business model for the Investment team.

The successful candidate will have a Science degree (or equivalent) and ideally industrial and managerial experience in a life sciences or a technology business. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for learning and personal development alongside a desire to achieve results.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Early stage investment - a good knowledge base of the UK early stage investment market and the challenges faced by University led companies.
  • Project management - conscientious, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritise workloads and multiple projects.
  • Financial evaluation - equipped to handle the financial and commercial aspects of managing a venture capital portfolio including financial analysis and reporting valuations.
  • Commercial analysis - designing, developing and critiquing business strategies based on sound judgement and good analysis.
  • Communicating with confidence - weighing up alternative courses of action, making firm decisions and persuading others. Able to influence and engender respect from a wide range of stakeholders both verbally and written.
  • Relationship with others – the ability to contribute to the newly formed OUI Investments team. To be able to either work independently or as part of a small team. Supporting the personal development of members with the OUI Investments’ team and the wider OUI organisation.

Ref 124 Senior Licensing & Ventures Manager - Incubator Lead (now filled)

We have an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join our Licensing & Ventures team. Responsibilities will include taking a leading role in managing our Start-Up Incubator, which has supported over 50 start-up ventures since 2011. Successes from the incubator include Onfido, Colwiz, Prolific.ac and Cycle.land. The role requires someone with entrepreneurial spirit, strong business acumen, excellent communication skills and a proven ability to manage interactions with a broad base of entrepreneurs, including students and alumni. 

The key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and evolving the OUI Start-up Incubator
  • Mentoring entrepreneurs through the key stages of incorporation and fundraising
  • Attracting suitable new ventures into the Incubator
  • Identifying and executing new commercial strategies to keep the Start-up Incubator sustainable
  • Initiating and developing collaborations and partnerships within the University and externally
  • Developing the profile of the Incubator regionally, nationally and internationally
  • Working with and influencing world-leading academics in the University community.

The successful candidate will have a relevant degree (or equivalent), with a PhD or MBA desirable but not essential. A strong background in software is preferred. They will need to demonstrate experience and expertise in supporting start-ups or running one. Adaptability and resilience in a fast-changing environment and problem-solving with diplomacy will be important for this role. 

Proven competence in the following is also essential:

  • Strategic thinking and proactively driving change
  • Grasping technical concepts quickly, and translating them into commercially viable proposals
  • Working effectively with multiple stakeholders, assertively influencing them and where appropriate showing tenacity and persistence in business development situations
  • Deploying excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Successfully negotiating commercial contracts, ideally related to the licensing of software products
  • Managing a portfolio of complex projects to a successful commercial conclusion.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated Marketing & Communications Manager to join the Marketing team.

This role is about promoting and marketing an even greater awareness of the successful outcomes of Oxford University’s innovation activities, and in particular Oxford University Innovation’s achievements in commercialising IP and expertise from the University. Creating appropriate content, managing the media, building relationships with journalists, delivering clear and focused communication, and PR activities are a key part of this role.

The key responsibilities of the role include;

  • Engaging with content contributors and media professionals to build and maintain positive coverage
  • Building and maintaining presence on digital marketing channels
  • Managing networking organisation membership and communications
  • Proactively working across the business to assist and encourage staff to provide content for promotion through the media.

The successful candidate will have a science degree (or equivalent), and experience of writing both for professional scientific audiences and generalist media.

Preferably holding a further degree and/or business qualification such as an MBA, they will also have experience of managing and influencing external clients, communication management, and digital marketing (web, email campaigns, social media).

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Ability to work effectively with journalists, and to influence them assertively
  • Excellent interpersonal and team working skills and attitudes, with drive and initiative to make things happen
  • Ability to build credibility and rapport with senior people and decision-makers from external clients
  • Delivering effective PR and media projects
  • Web management: methodical approach to capturing needs, then prioritising and tracking development within budget.
