Ref 133 Investment Manager (2 roles) - now filled

Oxford University Innovation Ltd is the highly successful research and technology commercialisation company owned by the University of Oxford. Working with over four thousand of the world’s brightest minds, we help them translate their ideas and expertise into projects that make a tangible difference to businesses and governments through technology licensing and the formation of spin-out companies.

The OUI Investments team is a newly formed team combining New Ventures Support and Spinout Equity Management. The OUI Investments team’s main responsibilities include: translational funding, supporting new company formation, fund raising, fund management and portfolio management.

We now have an exciting opportunity for two charismatic and motivated Investment Managers to join this team and support the Head of Investments in the development and delivery of the Investment team’s objectives outlined above.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Maintaining a seamless approach to spinout activities by proactively collaborating and supporting the Licensing & Ventures team in the creation of spinout, startup and social enterprises.
  • Supporting the management and expansion of the commercial funds including the Spinout Equity Management Fund and the Parkwalk University of Oxford Innovation Fund.
  • Reporting to the investment committees of the Funds and identifying new companies to support.
  • Acting as an ambassador for Oxford University Innovation and the University of Oxford, raising its profile within the investment and industry audiences. Supporting the raising of funds within the investment ecosystem for the University and its investment portfolio.
  • Acting as a spinout company Board level observer/director where appropriate, and working closely with Boards to build sustainable business platforms.
  • Obtaining and monitoring information submitted by spinouts and creating advisory reports to enable the University to be aware of the value of its assets, and of opportunities to invest further capital.
  • Supporting the realisation of the University and OUI’s investment portfolio to create a sustainable business model for the Investment team.

The successful candidate will have a Science degree (or equivalent) and ideally industrial and managerial experience in a life sciences or a technology business. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for learning and personal development alongside a desire to achieve results.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Early stage investment - a good knowledge base of the UK early stage investment market and the challenges faced by University led companies.
  • Project management - conscientious, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritise workloads and multiple projects.
  • Financial evaluation - equipped to handle the financial and commercial aspects of managing a venture capital portfolio including financial analysis and reporting valuations.
  • Commercial analysis - designing, developing and critiquing business strategies based on sound judgement and good analysis.
  • Communicating with confidence - weighing up alternative courses of action, making firm decisions and persuading others. Able to influence and engender respect from a wide range of stakeholders both verbally and written.
  • Relationship with others – the ability to contribute to the newly formed OUI Investments team. To be able to either work independently or as part of a small team. Supporting the personal development of members with the OUI Investments’ team and the wider OUI organisation.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Assistant Licensing & Ventures Manager to support the highly qualified and driven team within Licensing & Ventures to deliver on a range of their objectives including: defining commercial strategies for new technologies, analysis of technologies, patents, markets and data, writing marketing materials and reports, and supporting commercial and marketing activities. The role will report into the Head of Licensing & Ventures (Life Science) and has an emphasis on analysis and marketing. The Assistant Licensing & Ventures Manager will obtain a broad introduction into technology transfer activities.

Often working as part of a team on high-priority, complex technology transfer projects within the Group, the key responsibilities of the Assistant Licensing & Ventures Manager will be to support the team in:

  • Undertaking market research and analysis to enable commercially viable deals to be completed
  • Managing projects to a successful conclusion
  • Supporting the marketing of technologies to potential end-users in industry
  • Data handling and managing project administration, and supporting the relevant project manager in project work
  • Creating a strong team within the Group.

The successful candidate will have a Life Science degree (or equivalent) and ideally have some experience of work with large datasets and a demonstrated ability to cross scientific disciplines. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for learning and personal development alongside a desire to achieve results. Post-graduate qualifications, marketing/sales, and/or software and ICT experience would be desirable.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Communicating effectively with a wide range of people and organisations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Managing relationships through challenging situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Grasping technical concepts quickly, and understanding how these can be developed into marketable and commercially viable ideas
  • Making considered decisions that demonstrate sound judgement and good analysis
  • Learning quickly, accepting constructive feedback and putting it into practice.

The Licensing and Ventures Group is now operating in an unprecedented investment ecosystem and has an exciting opportunity for the successful applicant to join its highly motivated team in Oxford and play a pivotal role in commercialising deals. We are looking for a Licensing & Ventures Manager who can focus on commercialising the outcomes of the University’s research in Life Sciences. 

The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise new university technologies in the areas of drug discovery/development, biomarkers, diagnostics, medical devices and more
  • Identifying commercial strategies for transferring technologies to industry, including marketing to potential end-users
  • Negotiating appropriate licensing contracts, in conjunction with legal experts
  • Managing the formation of a spin-out company and running programmes that involve a variety of interdependent projects
  • Managing and administering post-deal activity.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in a Life Science discipline and commercial experience in industry and must have the ambition and track record to achieve results, along with a commitment to integrity and sound commercial judgement. Commercial experience in sectors such as medical technologies, diagnostics, healthcare technologies and pharmaceuticals is desirable and candidates should be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the steps required to translate scientific innovation into commercial products. 

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Grasping technical concepts quickly, and translating these into commercially viable proposals
  • Working effectively with key stakeholders, assertively influencing them and where appropriate showing tenacity and persistence in business development situations
  • Deploying excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Identifying commercial strategies for transferring technologies to industry, including marketing to potential end-users
  • Working successfully within a close-knit team and managing a large portfolio of projects to a successful commercial conclusion.

Senior Business Manager, UCL Business (now filled)

UCL Business PLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of University College London and generate income and create capital value for UCL and partner hospitals through the commercial exploitation of its extensive research base.

We are looking to recruit a Senior Business Manager to join their BioPharm team, who will be responsible for the technology transfer activities of mainly the UCL Institute of Opthalmology as well as other University departments.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong grounding in a biological or medical-related discipline to PhD level, together with significant commercial experience and an excellent grasp of intellectual property issues.

Previous technology transfer experience is desirable. The individual will be highly motivated and enthusiastic, with excellent negotiation, communication and organisational skills.

They will be required to work closely with academics and clinicians in identifying wide-ranging novel technologies, enable the development of the technologies, and ultimately the commercialisation of them at the interface of academia, healthcare and industry.

This is an exciting, highly dynamic role which is different to most other technology transfer business manager roles in that UCLB recently raised two investment funds: the UCL Technology Fund (£50 million, VC-backed fund) and the Apollo Therapeutics Fund (£40 million, in collaboration with Imperial Innovations, Cambridge Enterprise, GSK, AZ and J&J). The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with both funds, thereby giving direct and significant experience in working with these funds.

Salary range will be between £45k-£60k pro rata depending on experience. In addition, the company operates a contributory pension scheme and performance-related pay scheme.
