Deputy Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) Ref 120 (now filled)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional Deputy Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) who will work closely with his/her counterparts in Physical Sciences to lead, manage and coach a team of highly qualified and driven Technology Transfer Managers to deliver a range of objectives.

This role will report into the Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) and will include working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise their technologies by defining commercial strategies, protecting and managing IP, and marketing and selling the technologies.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Managing a significant team project portfolio to achieve a successful performance, and to budget
  • Managing the relationship between OUI and the inventor(s)
  • Acting as a spin-out company Board level observer/director, where appropriate
  • Acting as an ambassador for Oxford University Innovation and the University of Oxford, raising its profile within the innovation ecosystem.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in managing the commercialisation of life sciences technologies at the University of Oxford and in developing resources and networks (internal and external) to optimise this process. The successful candidate must have relevant industry experience and will ideally have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline and/or an MBA. They must also have the ability to inspire a team, possess strong people management skills and the ambition to achieve results, along with a commitment to integrity and sound commercial judgement.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Leading and coaching highly capable professionals in a high performance team
  • Working effectively with key stakeholders, assertively influencing them and, where appropriate, show tenacity and persistence in business development situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Successfully negotiating contracts with relevant industry sectors.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated Marketing & Communications Manager to join the Marketing team.

This role is about promoting and marketing an even greater awareness of the successful outcomes of Oxford University’s innovation activities, and in particular Oxford University Innovation’s achievements in commercialising IP and expertise from the University. Creating appropriate content, managing the media, building relationships with journalists, delivering clear and focused communication, and PR activities are a key part of this role.

The key responsibilities of the role include;

  • Engaging with content contributors and media professionals to build and maintain positive coverage
  • Building and maintaining presence on digital marketing channels
  • Managing networking organisation membership and communications
  • Proactively working across the business to assist and encourage staff to provide content for promotion through the media.

The successful candidate will have a science degree (or equivalent), and experience of writing both for professional scientific audiences and generalist media.

Preferably holding a further degree and/or business qualification such as an MBA, they will also have experience of managing and influencing external clients, communication management, and digital marketing (web, email campaigns, social media).

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Ability to work effectively with journalists, and to influence them assertively
  • Excellent interpersonal and team working skills and attitudes, with drive and initiative to make things happen
  • Ability to build credibility and rapport with senior people and decision-makers from external clients
  • Delivering effective PR and media projects
  • Web management: methodical approach to capturing needs, then prioritising and tracking development within budget.

Senior Project Manager (Medical Sciences) Ref: 100 (now filled)

Isis Innovation Ltd is the research commercialisation arm of the University of Oxford. The company’s successful Consulting Services team supports and enables academics from across the University to undertake a broad range of consultancy activities with external clients in an efficient and effective manner.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Project Manager to join the Consulting Services team with an overall objective of increasing the volume, reach and impact of Oxford’s consultancy activities in the Medical Sciences. The Senior Project Manager manages a portfolio of academic consultancy and technical services projects from initial enquiry through contract negotiation to deal closure and beyond, ensuring project delivery and customer satisfaction. They are also responsible for building a network of strong and productive relationships with a range of stakeholders, both within and outside the University.

The Senior Project Manager reports directly to the Head of Consulting Services and currently line-manages another Project Manager working in the Medical Sciences.

The key responsibilities will include:

  • Handling enquiries, scoping projects, negotiating contracts and closing deals
  • Actively managing a portfolio of projects, ensuring delivery and successful project outcomes
  • Building a network of relationships with researchers who undertake consultancy and leading initiatives to promote and develop academic consultancy activities in the Medical Sciences
  • Seeking out potential external clients and developing business opportunities for consultancy services in the Medical Sciences, which may include bid writing
  • Playing an active part in creating a professional, supportive, ‘can-do’ work environment both within the group and the wider company.

The successful candidate will minimally have a degree (or equivalent) in a medical or life science discipline and extensive experience of project/portfolio management, contract negotiation, and business development. They will be proficient in managing complex and, at times, intellectually challenging projects and will be skilled at identifying and mitigating risk. They will have an active customer focus and be motivated to provide an excellent support service to both our internal and external clients. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Showing tenacity and persistence to achieve successful project outcomes
  • Deploying excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Working successfully both independently and as an active team player
  • Managing relationships through challenging situations with tact and diplomacy.
