The Opportunity
The successful candidate will work within a talented and experienced team in the Licensing & Ventures Group, focusing on commercialising technologies developed predominantly from Engineering, Physics and Computer Science. The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise new technologies
  • Identifying and executing new commercial strategies for transferring technologies to industry
  • Negotiating appropriate licensing contracts, in conjunction with legal experts
  • Supporting the formation of spinout companies.

The Applicant

The successful applicant will have an engineering, physics, computer sciences or mathematics degree (or equivalent) with a PhD or MBA desirable but not essential. However, it is essential that you will have a good appreciation of research and development in a physical sciences field gained either in a commercial or technical role. You should also demonstrate a passion for entrepreneurship and enterprise, ideally also possessing some experience of related activities and with the ambition to achieve results. You will also need to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.

(Senior) Technology Transfer Manager (Physical Sciences) Ref 106 (now filled)

The Technology Transfer Group has an exciting opportunity for the successful applicant to join its highly motivated and successful team in Oxford. We are looking for a (Senior) Technology Transfer Manager who can focus on commercialising the outcomes of the University’s research in physical sciences.

The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise new university technologies in the areas of engineering, physics, materials, computer science or mathematics
  • Identifying commercial strategies for transferring technologies to industry, including marketing to potential end-users
  • Negotiating appropriate licensing contracts, in conjunction with legal experts
  • Managing the formation of a spin-out company and running programmes that involve a variety of interdependent projects
  • Managing and administering post-deal activity.

The successful candidate will ideally have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant physical science or an MBA with a degree in a physical science plus at least several years’ commercial experience in industry. They should also have the ambition to achieve results, along with a commitment to integrity and sound commercial judgement.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Grasping technical concepts quickly, and translating these into commercially viable proposals
  • Working effectively with key stakeholders, assertively influencing them and where appropriate showing tenacity and persistence in business development situations
  • Deploying excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Successfully negotiating and licensing commercial contracts with relevant industry sectors
  • Working successfully within a close-knit team
  • Managing a large portfolio of complex projects to a successful commercial conclusion

Assistant Technology Transfer Manager (Physical Sciences), Licensing & Ventures Ref 099 (now filled)

We now have an exciting opportunity for a charismatic and motivated Assistant Technology Transfer Manager to support the highly qualified and driven team within the Technology Transfer Group to deliver on a range of their objectives including: defining commercial strategies for new technologies, analysis of technologies, patents, markets and data, writing marketing materials, and supporting Isis commercial and marketing activities. The role will report into the Head of Operations and has an emphasis on marketing and analysis. The Assistant Technology Transfer Manager will obtain a broad introduction into technology transfer activities.

Often working as part of a team on high-priority, complex technology transfer projects, the key responsibilities of the Assistant Technology Transfer Manager will be to support the Technology Transfer Group in:

  • Undertaking market research and analysis to enable commercially viable deals to be completed
  • Managing projects to a successful conclusion
  • Supporting the marketing of technologies to potential end-users in industry
  • Managing project administration and supporting the relevant project manager in project work
  • Creating a strong team within the Group.

The successful candidate will have a Physical Science degree (or equivalent) and ideally have a PhD and some experience of either analysis or marketing/sales. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for learning and personal development alongside a desire to achieve results. Post-graduate qualifications, demonstrated ability to cross scientific disciplines and/or engineering, software and ICT experience would be desirable.The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Communicating effectively with a wide range of people and organisations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Managing relationships through challenging situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Grasping technical concepts quickly, and understanding how these can be developed into marketable and commercially viable ideas
  • Making considered decisions that demonstrate sound judgement and good analysis

Learning quickly, accepting constructive feedback and putting it into practice.

  • Identifying and executing new commercial strategies for transferring technologies to industry
  • Marketing software and related technologies to potential end-users
  • Negotiating appropriate licensing contracts, in conjunction with legal experts
  • Supporting the formation of spin-out companies

Supporting post-deal activity, including renewals to licences.

The successful candidate will have an engineering, computer sciences, physics or mathematics degree or equivalent, with a PhD desirable but not essential. However, it is essential that they will have a good appreciation of research and development in a field related to physical sciences and preferably of the development, application and use of software gained either in a commercial or technical role. With the ambition to achieve results, along with a commitment to integrity and sound commercial judgement, the successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Grasping technical concepts quickly, and translating these into commercially viable proposals
  • Working effectively with key stakeholders, assertively influencing them and where appropriate showing tenacity and persistence in business development situations
  • Deploying excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing
