Ref 133 Investment Manager (2 roles) - now filled

Oxford University Innovation Ltd is the highly successful research and technology commercialisation company owned by the University of Oxford. Working with over four thousand of the world’s brightest minds, we help them translate their ideas and expertise into projects that make a tangible difference to businesses and governments through technology licensing and the formation of spin-out companies.

The OUI Investments team is a newly formed team combining New Ventures Support and Spinout Equity Management. The OUI Investments team’s main responsibilities include: translational funding, supporting new company formation, fund raising, fund management and portfolio management.

We now have an exciting opportunity for two charismatic and motivated Investment Managers to join this team and support the Head of Investments in the development and delivery of the Investment team’s objectives outlined above.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Maintaining a seamless approach to spinout activities by proactively collaborating and supporting the Licensing & Ventures team in the creation of spinout, startup and social enterprises.
  • Supporting the management and expansion of the commercial funds including the Spinout Equity Management Fund and the Parkwalk University of Oxford Innovation Fund.
  • Reporting to the investment committees of the Funds and identifying new companies to support.
  • Acting as an ambassador for Oxford University Innovation and the University of Oxford, raising its profile within the investment and industry audiences. Supporting the raising of funds within the investment ecosystem for the University and its investment portfolio.
  • Acting as a spinout company Board level observer/director where appropriate, and working closely with Boards to build sustainable business platforms.
  • Obtaining and monitoring information submitted by spinouts and creating advisory reports to enable the University to be aware of the value of its assets, and of opportunities to invest further capital.
  • Supporting the realisation of the University and OUI’s investment portfolio to create a sustainable business model for the Investment team.

The successful candidate will have a Science degree (or equivalent) and ideally industrial and managerial experience in a life sciences or a technology business. They will also possess enthusiasm, positivity and an appetite for learning and personal development alongside a desire to achieve results.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Early stage investment - a good knowledge base of the UK early stage investment market and the challenges faced by University led companies.
  • Project management - conscientious, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritise workloads and multiple projects.
  • Financial evaluation - equipped to handle the financial and commercial aspects of managing a venture capital portfolio including financial analysis and reporting valuations.
  • Commercial analysis - designing, developing and critiquing business strategies based on sound judgement and good analysis.
  • Communicating with confidence - weighing up alternative courses of action, making firm decisions and persuading others. Able to influence and engender respect from a wide range of stakeholders both verbally and written.
  • Relationship with others – the ability to contribute to the newly formed OUI Investments team. To be able to either work independently or as part of a small team. Supporting the personal development of members with the OUI Investments’ team and the wider OUI organisation.

General Manager and Club Secretary, The Bugatti Owners' Club (now filled)

The Bugatti Owners’ Club established in 1929 is one of UK’s most prestigious motor clubs with over 2,200 members and a staff of seven based on the Club’s privately-owned Prescott Estate in Gotherington near Cheltenham.

The successful candidate will be the public face of the Club, and the main point of contact between the membership and the Club office. The General Manager reports directly to the Club Chairman, and is responsible to the non-executive Board for the overall performance of the Club against agreed strategic plans and budgets. You will be responsible for an experienced team of staff who manage the Club’s busy programme of on-site events, and a committed membership who volunteer over a wide range of activities from managing the Club’s archives to marshalling and stewarding at motor racing events held on the historic Prescott Hillclimb course.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Managing all aspects of the Club against an agreed annual budget and strategy
  • Negotiating major contracts, nurturing sponsors and commercial relationships
  • Organising the compilation of the annual events calendar, specifically the seven weekends of competitive motorsport held at Prescott
  • Managing an experienced team and the many Club volunteers
  • Managing the Club’s financial affairs and its relationship with the auditors
  • Organising events and PR including press releases, quarterly newsletters, brochures and leaflet production, and up-front media representation to ensure good PR visibility
  • Managing local contractors in the maintenance and development of the Estate and the suppliers to events
  • Liaising with and attending community, motoring and Hillclimb committee meetings
  • Managing the Club’s relationships with the sport’s governing body, the Motor Sport Association (MSA), trade associations and key car clubs.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven competence in the following:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to engage across a wide and diverse range of Club stakeholders
  • Leadership skills in a multi-stakeholder and regulated environment
  • Established track record in business management
  • Ability to deliver an excellent visitor experience to members and supporters of the Club
  • Planning and project management skills.

Salary for this role will be £55k plus benefits.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, engaging and motivated Head of Finance to join the Senior Management Team and oversee all financial aspects of the business and drive the OUI’s financial strategy. The role will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will work closely with all colleagues on the Senior Management Team and will also develop effective relationships with key stakeholders within the University.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Strategic Management: Contributing to the strategic management of OUI by developing and maintaining strategies that encompass the Finance Department.
  • Financial Management: Working effectively with colleagues providing key financial information, forecasts and insightful management reporting analysis.
  • Team Leadership: Inspiring the Finance Team by establishing excellent ongoing working relationships.
  • Delivery: Delivering an excellent service to all customers and key stakeholders both internally and externally.

The ideal candidate will be a graduate who is fully qualified (ACA, ACMA, CIMA, ACCA or equivalent) with significant PQE. They will possess in-depth knowledge of finance and accounting principles, laws and best practices and have proven experience in a similar senior level role. They will be able to demonstrate financial leadership, commercial business partnering and have an approach that is flexible and a mind-set that is logical and considered.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in the following;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong communication skills and the ability to engage with all levels across the business
  • A pragmatic approach and adeptness at forging effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, influencing them and, where appropriate, showing persistence in achieving agreed objectives
  • Significant experience in direct management and leadership of a Finance Team
  • Proven experience of budget preparation, settling and monitoring, and financial forecasting
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office and financial management software (ideally SAGE).

Deputy Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) Ref 120 (now filled)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional Deputy Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) who will work closely with his/her counterparts in Physical Sciences to lead, manage and coach a team of highly qualified and driven Technology Transfer Managers to deliver a range of objectives.

This role will report into the Head of Technology Transfer (Life Sciences) and will include working with and influencing world-leading academics to commercialise their technologies by defining commercial strategies, protecting and managing IP, and marketing and selling the technologies.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Managing a significant team project portfolio to achieve a successful performance, and to budget
  • Managing the relationship between OUI and the inventor(s)
  • Acting as a spin-out company Board level observer/director, where appropriate
  • Acting as an ambassador for Oxford University Innovation and the University of Oxford, raising its profile within the innovation ecosystem.

The successful candidate will play a leading role in managing the commercialisation of life sciences technologies at the University of Oxford and in developing resources and networks (internal and external) to optimise this process. The successful candidate must have relevant industry experience and will ideally have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline and/or an MBA. They must also have the ability to inspire a team, possess strong people management skills and the ambition to achieve results, along with a commitment to integrity and sound commercial judgement.

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate proven competence in:

  • Leading and coaching highly capable professionals in a high performance team
  • Working effectively with key stakeholders, assertively influencing them and, where appropriate, show tenacity and persistence in business development situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and very strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Successfully negotiating contracts with relevant industry sectors.
